Los Altos Primary Suite Remodel | Catalina Foothills

When my clients asked me to rethink the primary suite of their Catalina Foothills home, the house had accumulated layers of materials from years of additions and renovations. In fact, there were nine different flooring materials throughout the home.

I brought more cohesion to the house while creating a primary suite that feels lighter, more comfortable and easier to live in.

The character of this brick Territorial home played an important role in the design. I looked to materials that felt connected to the architecture, interpreting them in a cleaner, more contemporary way. My clients and I visited a home in Tucson’s Old Barrio to see traditional plaster and tadelakt in place before deciding how those materials could work here.

In the bathroom, tadelakt, warm wood cabinetry and patterned tile bring texture and character to what had been a very dark space. More natural light and a simpler palette make the room feel open and connected to the rest of the suite.

The layout, storage, lighting and bathing areas were considered with everyday comfort in mind, including how the space could continue to work well for my clients for many years to come.

The adjoining bedroom and sitting area were treated as part of the same story, creating private spaces that feel connected to one another and to the architecture of the house.

The result is a primary suite that feels cohesive, comfortable and personal, while still belonging to the brick Territorial home around it.
